"To be honest, I couldn't care less about this Snark's Horace. The family
in the dungeons, though..." pondered Astra.
"They have a three year old child. No child deserves to live here." Agreed Fred. Astra sat back, chewing her lip. "How are we supposed to get out of here, though?" "Well...." Fred said. "There is that window..." Astra went over to the window and pressed her forehead against the glass, looking down. "No. No way. No fricking way." Fred smiled. "Smash the glass, knot these sheets together, piece of cake. It always worked in the boarding school books." "We'd gash ourselves getting out of that window, it's too small." "Not if we stripped all the glass away." "We don't have enough sheets to get to the ground, it's about three hundred feet straight down." "Why do we need to? Get down to the next floor, kick the glass in a window, take care of any interfering people with glass blades, find the dungeons, let the people out, job done." "You're insane." "Oh, come on. We're Lord Fred and Astra of Aquamarine. We've got out of much worse than an uppity centaur and a third rate locked room." Astra sighed. Her pride wouldn't let her back away. "Fine. But you're going out of that window first." Fred's smile vanished. "What? I'm not going out there. You know I have a phobia of heights. Anyway, I wouldn't fit through that window. No, you go out of the window, get in, come back round and let me out, yeah?" Astra glared at him, then slipped off one of her metal toe-capped boots, smashing it into the window. Most of the glass fell outside, but some fell into the room. She picked up the largest bit and wrapped one end in cloth, creating a knife. She and Fred quickly knotted the sheets together, creating a length of maybe thirty feet. Glancing back at him one last time, she swung herself out of the window and absailed down the window, kicking in the first window she came to. This room was a kitchen, full of cooks dressed in white, looking rather surprised to see her. Too many to silence. Astra grabbed a melon from a table and dug the blade into in, demonstrating how sharp it was. "Get on the floor and nobody gets hurt!" she screamed, watching with satisfaction as the cooks dropped to the floor like flies. She ran out of the room, dragging a heavy cabinet across the door to keep them in for a while. The corridor outside was deserted. Making sure her boots didn't clack against the stone floor, Astra began trying to find a staircase. After a few minutes, she found one leading up to the next floor, where Fred was. As she ran up the stairs, someone else came walking down them. Without thinking twice, Astra flipped them over the banister. Luckily they didn't have that far to fall, but the crack of skull on stone would mean they would be out for quite a while. Astra found Fred's door and was surprised to find it unlocked, only kept closed by eight well-oiled bolts that went up the side of the door. She quickly opened the door and let Fred out. They found the dungeons easily enough. They were guarded by only two sleepy trolls. Astra knocked their heads together without them even realising she was there, and took their keys. They got to a heavy locked door. A few experiments with the keys opened the door easily enough, and Fred and Astra stepped inside. There was a family there, a mother and father, a boy who looked about twelve and a young toddler. Then the alarm went off. It was so loud, so shrill and horrible that Fred and Astra couldn't believe it for a few seconds, and stood still dumbly. The mother and father and their son cowered against the wall, but the little girl went crazy, her limbs seeming to extend as she leapt about like a monkey, making ungodly sounds. Astra gasped involuntarily, then dashed into the cell. "Get out!" she screamed. "Come with us!" The older people stared at her, not moving, but the girl leapt from a wall, landed on Astra's shoulders and screamed at her family. The sides of her legs were pressed against Astra's ears, sheilding her from the sound, but her family got a full blast. Slowly, they slipped down the wall, their eyes going blank. A thin trickle of blood began to drip out of her brother's ear as he stared stupidly forwards. Horrified, Astra clamped a hand over the girl's mouth but it was too late. Fred ran inside to the family but they were already dead. Fred turned to look at Astra. "Run!" she shouted, the alarm still screaming. She dropped the girl and made to run, but Fred stopped. "What are you doing?" he demanded. "We can't leave her!" "She killed them!" "She's only a child." Fred said, picking up the girl and running after Astra. They found an escape door easily, and once they had got a fair distance away set the child down. She had calmed down, and appeared to be like any other three year old girl. "What's your name?" asked Fred gently. "Holly." said the girl placidy, sitting back sucking her thumb.
