"Assume for the moment that these men are not charlatans," Granny
said. "Now what is your opinion, Black Zari?"
Astra paused before answering in order to gather her thoughts. She had the feeling that she was on trial. She was standing in the centre of the open area, with Granny a short distance away facing her. The benches had filled up with people from the village. Amongst them she could see the boy who had first discovered her. This is a bit like the treason hearings that my mother occasionally presides at back home, she thought. Much less formal of course. And this place also seems to be a matriarchy, though a much smaller one that Aqualaria. Now what should I say? But at that moment she was suddenly seized by a feeling of giddiness. The ground seemed to be moving up and down, as though it was an ocean. She swayed on her feet. Granny's sharp eyes noticed her discomfort. "Are you all right, dokta?" she asked. "I feel dizzy," she replied, aware that she seemed to be slurring her words slightly. "You didn't drink from the river, did you?" "Yesh. I noticed that it tashted a bit funny. Why? Ishn't it shafe?"
