The Never Ending Quest - Episode 43144

Odly enough, it was not the maiden but the knife-wielding maniac who was screaming as though in agony. Astra rugby-tackled him and brought him down. The impact sent the knife skidding out of his hand. Fred grabbed it, and held it at his throat, but in spite of this he continued to struggle violently in Astra's grasp.

"Please don't hurt him!" the maiden cried. She was very beautiful, with long blonde hair. She wore a gown of deep blue. "He's my brother. He's under the control of the wicked wizard whose tower this is, and who thought it would be amusing to compel him to attack me. His cries of pain were caused by his unsuccessful efforts to resist the compulsion that he is under."

The man was no longer crying with pain and had stopped struggling. In between gasps for breath, he said: "It's all lies! She is the evil sorceress whose tower this is. I was trying to catch and kill her, and the pain that I felt was caused by her attempt to stop me."

Fred and Astra looked from one to the other, unsure who to believe.

  1. Since the maiden had told them not to hurt the man, which surely she would not have done had the man's story been true, they believed her.
  2. They believed the man, since the stars and moons embroidered on the maiden's gown indicated that she was a sorceress.
  3. Before they could make up their minds...
