Astra heard Minestus's voice in her head. The Glider knows that I can't
flame her now, as that would risk damaging both you and the book, each of
which is valuable to me. But in coming towards you, she has overlooked
that you are my bondswoman. You must overpower her.
Astra reluctantly decided that it would be dishonourable to pretend that Belboz and Minestus were different beings, and that an oath made to one did not apply to the other. She would have to obey, but at least she could try to save Checkers' life. Only if you promise not to kill her, she responded. I don't recall that any limits were set to your obedience. But very well, I promise. Minestus thought to himself: But by the time I am finished with the Glider, she will probably wish that she was dead. By this time, Checkers had taken up a position next to Astra. The Glider was breathing heavily from her exertions. "Are you all right?" she asked the Princess. Checkers thought that Astra not only looked very tired, but that if anything she appeared even more sad and preoccupied than before. Instead of answering her, Astra said: "I'm so sorry, Checkers." Then she aimed a powerful chop with the side of her hand at the arm holding the spear.
