Minestus was alarmed. The Glider was apparently both more resourceful and
more agile than he had given her credit for, and she had managed to get
herself into the one place where he could not get at her - on his own
back. He reared up suddenly, at the same time twisting sideways, in the
hope of dislodging her.
Unfortunately for Checkers, she was on her knees at that moment, prying a scale up with her spear. Thus she was much easier to shift than had she been clinging on tightly. She felt herself starting to slip, and held on tightly to her spear, hoping that its point would remain wedged under the scale that she had been prising up. For a moment it semed that the spear might hold. But then, under the strain of bearing all of Checkers' weight, it came free. Checkers, still grasping it tightly, found herself falling from a height of about ten feet. She had just enough time to spread her wings in an attempt to cushion her fall, and then she hit the rock floor. Astra came muzzily back to consciousness, feeling as though she had a nasty hangover. She could hear some sort of commotion nearby, which was probably what had roused her. She must have passed out from the strain of the tap, she realised. She seemed to be within some sort of wooden box that was just large enough for her body, but it was open on one side, so she crawled out and got rather groggily to her feet.
