Astra was awoken by the uncomfortable sensation of being dragged across a
stone floor on her back. She opened her eyes, and saw that she was being
dragged feet first by Checkers out of the refuge under the wooden stand.
Checkers was covered in blood that was almost black. Astra feared for a
moment that it might be the Glider's own blood, but then Checkers turned
her face towards her and she saw that she was grinning from ear to ear.
Checkers saw that Astra had regained consciousness. "I did it, Astra!" she exclaimed. "I actually did it! I killed Minestus. I got on his back, and I pried up a scale, and I plunged in my spear with all my strength. Blood spurted from the wound, and he thrashed about, but that quickly became weaker, and then he lay still. I can hardly believe that I really did it. I must cut out an eye or something to take home with me, to prove to them that I've succeeded." Astra felt as though a great weight had been lifted from her. "Well done, Checkers!" she said, clambering a little unsteadily to her feet and hugging the Glider. "I shall always be in your debt. Won't we have a surprise for Fred when he gets back! And did you know that my country set a bounty of ten thousand gold pieces to be paid to anyone who killed the dragon? You'll be rich." She looked over Checkers' shoulder...
