"Well," Artizza says, "I don't suppose that you'd want to go back to your
old life now, even supposing that you would be able to. Not only are you
no longer human, but you're also immortal, which could be the bigger
problem of the two. Not so much for your friends and family but more for
yourself, since you would see everyone you knew grow old and die whilst
you remained unchanged. It would be a lot easier for you if you could make
friends with some other immortals. One possibility would be for you to
find some other wood elves with whom you could settle down, but I think
that you might find that a little dull and so I have an alternative
suggestion.
"Now I don't have the authority to enroll you as a Champion such as all of our group are. Only our 'employers', the Rules and Agents, can do that. They may well offer you the choice of becoming one - in fact I think it's very likely that they will. But since you are immortal anyway, I don't see why you shouldn't work with us even if you aren't officially a Champion, if you'd like to. After all, as a former Astra you are pretty much guaranteed to have the qualities that we need. And you've already demonstrated your newly-acquired prowess at woodlore, which would be very useful." "Thank you," Aialia replies. "I think I'd like that." "I'll have to talk to the others, of course, but I'm sure that they will agree." With the rest of the group still asleep, the conversation between Aialia and Artizza turns to other things. (Fertal mostly just listens.) "This outfit that I'm wearing," Aialia says. "It's rather ridiculous from my former human viewpoint, and it won't be very practical for fighting in. But my new elven instincts tell me that somehow it's right for me." "Well, it certainly shows off your curves rather well. And - how does the old joke go? - you've got curves in places that other women don't even have places." "I suppose I can thank Stryke for that, though 'thank' isn't exactly the word that I'd choose for what he did to me. In fact I'd like to think that we'll meet again some day, so that I can tell him personally what I think of him before I kill him." "It's probably better that you don't meet him again," Fertal puts in. "He is clearly a very dangerous mage, and I'm not even sure whether he can be killed in the conventional way. Even all of us together would have our hands full with him."
