Checkers Makes Her Decision

In his human form he seemed quite a frail and elderly man. Was it possible that, even without a weapon, she could knock him unconscious, before retrieving her spear to finish the job? That might give him less warning than slowing to pick up the spear would do.

How good was his hearing? Could she cover the ground quietly enough not to alert him? Of course, the faster she went the more noise she was likely to make, so there was a trade-off to be made. Again she regretted that she could not use a flying dive, as that might have been quieter.

Checkers knew that she could not afford to think for too long. At any moment Belboz might open his eyes again and look up. What decided her in the end was the thought of what the angry dragon-mage might do to Astra if she (Checkers) did not attack now but hid herself instead. It would not have been Astra's fault that she had vanished, but she was not sure that Belboz would see it that way.

1. So she screwed up her courage and, attempting to combine speed and quietness as best she could, ran across the cave in the direction of Belboz (and her nearby spear).
