A Shortcut?

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 42841

“I’m okay!” Fred shouted back. “But Charles hurt his ankle in the fall! I’m afraid this may impede our progress! Come on down! The water’s nice!”

“Uh, that’s okay!” Amy rebuffed. “I think I’ll just stay up here where it’s nice and dry! Don’t worry, we’ll figure out a way to get you back up! And I’m sure Charles will be just fine!”

“You really might want to reconsider! I think this may be a shortcut to the Dragon’s Lair!”

“A shortcut to the Dragons Lair!? What makes you think that!?”

“Well,” his voice echoed, “namely, the big flashing neon light sign that says ‘Shortcut to the Dragon’s Lair, This Way —>’!”

This struck Amy as slightly odd. “What’s a piece of 20th century technology doing in a medieval setting!?”

“We’ll have to leave that debate for future philosophers and historians to discuss amongst themselves around the fireplaces of tomorrow, when this whole fiasco is over! Come on down!”

Velociraptors, bears eating porridge, giant spiders, delusional knights, neon lights...when would it end for Amy? She shook her head and went on down the slide, seeing no better alternative. She landed with a splash, of course. But that was a given.

Sure enough - there it was above the water, the neon sign in all of it’s flashing glory. It pointed in the direction of the current. In any case, there was no escaping the water. On either side of the corridor it was bordered by a starkly rising brick wall. At least the water was only waist-deep and some overly-convenient torches lined the wall intermediately to light their way.

“Hmmm, I wonder...” Amy pondered, her female intuition aroused. “Could this be a trap?”

“A trap!? Of course not!” Fred replied. “If it was a trap, the sign would say so! Neon signs never lie, Amy. They can’t.”

Amy was about to argue that point, but thought better of it. “I guess we might as well see where it leads, for better or for worse.”

“Yes, I think that’s a good idea. Prince Charles seems to be doing better now, so perhaps the injuries he sustained aren’t as severe as I thought. He gets a little dramatic sometimes. You know how royalty can get.”

“Uh...yeah,” Amy indulged him. “I sure do. On we go...”

After several hours of trudging along through the waters, the tired...trio...finally arrived at....

  1. a landing area, left unguarded.
  2. a dead end, with a whirlpool sucking the water down to God knows where.
  3. another neon sign.
