Not Much Choice

Chris gulped. "What will happen to me if you don't do the appendectomy?" he asked.

"You'll almost certainly die," she told him bluntly.

Chris gulped again. He paused, then said in a shaking voice: "Then you'd better go ahead."

Amy wished that she still had her lighter. "Do you have anything with which to make a flame?" she asked.

"You need more light to operate by?" he queried.

"No, I need to sterilise this," she said, bringing the dagger from behind her back.

1. Chris fainted clean away when he saw it. If Amy was quick enough, perhaps she could complete the appendectomy before he came round. At least she needn't worry about getting blood on her clothes.
2. "There's a tinder box in my pack," Chris told her.
3. "No," he said.
