In a far corner, screened off by bookshelves from the main part of the
room, Astra found a coil of stout rope on a shelf. On the next shelf up
was a piece of cloth that would serve as a gag. Ideal, she thought.
Once the sorceress was no longer in a position to speak or gesture, they
would no longer need to fear any magic from her.
But as Astra picked up the rope, it seemed to writhe in her grasp. Before she knew what was happening, she found that she was lying on the floor on her stomach, her hands securely tied together behind her back and her ankles also tied together. Her legs were bent back behind her, with a short length of rope attaching her ankles to her wrists. The piece of cloth was stuffed in her mouth, preventing her from alerting Fred to her predicament. And the intervening bookshelves prevented him from seeing her. Damn! she thought. I should have followed my own advice and been more cautious. I might have known that everything around here would be enchanted. I only hope that Fred will find and free me before the sorceress comes round.
