Dragon Combat 101

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 42654

"Very well," Solbert said. "Your optimum combat tactics will of course depend on the species of your opponent. There would ordinarily only be two main species that we would need to consider: humans and other dragons. But in your special circumstances, we will need to add Gliders to the list. All that I know of Gliders, I have learnt through observing Checkers, and I am therefore still very much a beginner where they are concerned. So you will need to find out about their strengths and weaknesses from her. Before then, I will speak to her and try to encourage her to be frank with you, though it may prove difficult.

"I can tell you much about fighting humans and dragons, however. Though I hope that you will never have need to fight either, it would be well to be prepared. Combat as a dragon will be very different to what you have been used to. You may have practised swordplay, or perhaps the use of other weapons. But now your main weapons will be instrinsic to yourself: your ability to breathe flame, your claws and your teeth, and perhaps magic as well.

"But before we can consider the best tactics to use against different opponents, you will need to learn more about your own capabilities and limitations. The most fundamental thing of all is to be aware of what your most vulnerable parts are, so that you can try to protect them. You are a formidable adversary, but a blade or arrowhead in the right place can still bring you down. So, Astra, what do you think that your weaknesses might be?"

"Well, most of my body seems to be well protected by scales, but my belly is not."

"That is correct. So you should try to avoid exposing it to an enemy. Usually easy enough when you are on the ground, but unfortunately it is hard to avoid when you are in the air. So if you are flying close to the ground you should try to keep an eye out for places where archers might be concealed and detour around them if necessary. And of course, whenever possible you should fly high enough to be out of range of an arrow. Above a hundred feet you should be fairly safe. Can you think of any other weaknesses?"

  1. "My eyes?" Astra suggests.
  2. "No," Astra says.
