Neither woman had yet noticed that Fred had awoken. He lay and listened to
their conversation.
"But Tardischan, that surely can't be true?" Astra was saying, excited yet incredulous. Tardischan? Fred had heard of her. She was a noted adventuress. Nobody was quite sure what country she came from originally. She was wearing a long, loose, white robe with a hood - currently pushed back. That was practical attire for travelling in the desert. Astra was now similarly dressed; Tardischan must have had a spare robe in her pack. Fred wondered what had brought the adventuress to the oasis. "It is true," Tardsischan told Astra. "But look, your man is awake." Astra laughed. "He's not my man, but he's brave and kind and noble, so I could do a lot worse. How are you feeling now, Fred?" "Much better, thanks Astra. But I'm very hungry." "I picked some figs and dates from the palms whilst you were sleeping. Have some." She held out a handful of fruit, which Fred took from her. Then she said: "Fred, I'd like to introduce Tardischan. Tardischan, this is Lord Frederigo D'Honaire from Allaria." "Hello," Fred said. "I'm pleased to meet you, Tardischan. I've heard of your exploits, of course. So what's true? Whatever it is, you and Astra seem to be very excited about it." It was Astra who answered. "Tardischan has discovered where the mage Zerm the Unspeakable has been holding my great-aunt Helena in magical stasis for the last sixty years. [232] It's a fortress only a few miles from here. I must try to rescue her."
