The thought of having the beautiful naked woman rubbing oil on his back
was like a dream. In fact, that is exactly what it may have been. Fred
wasn't sure, and he wasn't sure if he would ever know the truth. What he
did know was that he awoke with a start - he was still in the shade of the
tree, he still sniffed the scent of the oil rubbed into his sun-burns, but
the beautiful naked woman was no longer on his back rubbing the oil onto
those wounds. Instead she lay, on her own naked back, dead - victim of a
slit
throat. The only clue to her death was a quickly dissolving sphere of
light.
Fred lept to his feet, grabbed his sword, and stood in the defensive posture taught him in his land of Suffex. There was no one in sight, the only trace that a third person had even entered the oasis were the footprints in the earth - footprints which disappeared right about where Fred has seen that strange sphere of light. There was only one conclusion for Fred: The Master! Fred didn't know who or what The Master was, he only knew that it was he (or she) that had cried out: You have destroyed my loyal disciple! You shall pay! He pondered the words of the now-dead warrior-woman: The greatest risk we take in killing an evil wizard is that it rouses the attention of a yet more powerful master! And so here Fred was, a victorious Dragon-Slayer and yet whose triumph had been sacked by a creature of unknown power and kind. He knew that he must return to his homeland, to Allaria, yet he wasn't even sure where he was. He had surmised that it was the Calamari Desert, yet he was far from sure and had no real proof to show. His assertion was more to calm the southern Princess and to exhibit his intelligence than a true evaluation of his surroundings. And so, now without companion, and somewhat fearful that another ball of death would be launched his way, Fred of Allaria began to inspect the oasis and its environs in hopes of discovering where he might be, or of spying some outpost nearby. After a few hours of watching the skies, of trudging north and south, east and west a good distance from the oasis but not leaving sight of that site of precious shade and water, he was no closer to divining where he was, but he knew for certain there was no outpost within eyesight. Eventually the sun fled and the moon rose. The heat of day was replaced by the cold of night. Fred had torn his shirt into rags when he and his companion had found themselves transported to this horrible place, he now found himself shivering. He still kept a lookout for mysterious balls of light, but none had appeared since the murder of Astra. With none to keep him vigil, the knight drifted into sleep, one troubled by wierd dreams.
