A Scream in the Night

Astra, Charmina and Angela were awoken by a scream from somewhere in the
street beneath their upper storey window. Astra opened the window and
poked her head out, but it was too dark down below for her to see
anything. Deciding that putting on her armour would take too long when
someone's life might be in peril, she only paused to pick up her sword and
then - clad in her underthings - emerged onto the landing. Charmina and
Angela, who had slept fully dressed, were right behind her.
The landing and the stairs were lit by glowing glass bulbs, so they were able to find their way out onto the street with no trouble. (Astra had wondered why their own room had not had any candles or oil lamps. Now she realised that the glass bulb that was mysteriously set in the middle of the ceiling might have provided them with light if they had only understood its function and known how to turn it on.) The street seemed to be deserted, as far as they could tell in the darkness. Whether through fear or callousness, nobody else appeared to have ventured out at this late hour to investigate the scream. Then Charmina stumbled over something. It was a body! Presumably this was the person who had screamed.
