Paradise - or Trouble?

Captain Haljon scowled. "Don't be fooled by the name," he said. "Captain Shirk probably named it that when he first saw it. I dare say that it looked idyllic, but then proved to have hidden dangers after a day or two."

"But why should you think that?" Louise asked, looking puzzled.

"Because Shirk seemed to be jinxed," the captain said. "Anywhere he went, however peaceful it looked, there was always trouble of some sort before very long, and he and his crew would barely escape with their lives."

"So we aren't going to go there, then?" Thelma said.

Haljon scratched at his beard again. "Well, we badly need fresh water, and the archipeligo wouldn't be safe for us. This Paradise Island is easily the nearest of the other possibilities. We'll just put in there briefly for as long as it takes us to fill our water barrels, and then leave. That should be fairly safe."
