Astra on Horseback

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 41794

Astra had never thought that horses were especially intelligent creatures, compared to say dogs or pigs, but she was starting to wonder if she should revise her opinion. It certainly seemed as though Gilder's Folly was following instructions given to him by the mystery horse. Without the benefit of spurs or a whip to help in guiding him, Astra decided not to try to fight him through the bridle's bit, but to let him go where he would. After all, it wasn't as though she knew which was the best way to go.

Giving the horse his head was only acceptable so long as he did not head back towards Gilder's palace. of course, but to her relief he headed in the opposite direction. Coming to a gate out of the field, he patiently waited whilst she leant over and was able to open it without needing to dismount. That was good, since without anything convenient to stand on it would have been hard to remount.

The gate opened into a track, which the horse commenced to canter down. Astra hoped that he knew what he was doing, as there was very little light. She could barely see the fence on the left or the hedge on the right, let alone the surface of the track itself. If there were any potholes, then Folly could easily stumble and break a leg.

After a few minutes, the track intersected what seemed to be a proper road - not that Astra assumed that this would guarantee a good surface. Folly turned along it, and upped his pace a little.

  1. This late in the evening, the road was deserted.
  2. Astra soon encountered another traveller.
  3. When the road reached a wayside inn, Folly would go no further. Was this where the mystery horse had told him to bring her? Or was it that he did not know the road beyond this point?
