"It's too intriguing to ignore," Fred replied. "But just in case it's
dangerous, perhaps once we've descended from this ridge we should leave
the path and approach it obliquely." Astra agreed with this.
Once they had reached the foot of the ridge, the pyramid was no longer visible. But they knew the direction in which it lay, and if it was as large as it appeared then it should be visible from a considerable distance, so they did not anticipate any difficulty in finding it again. They struck off at an angle from the path, and made their way through fairly open deciduous woodland for about twenty minutes. Then they changed course again, to travel in a direction which they believed was roughly parallel to the path that they had left. After a while, the tip of the pyramid came into view again. Slowly more and more of it became visible. It was almost dusk before they reached it - or rather the last bush that provided some shelter, after which there was about a hundred yards of bare earth to cover. At that point they paused to take stock. Now they could see just how large the pyramid was: its face was almost a quarter of a mile wide at the foot, and they estimated that its tip was at a height of some eight or nine hundred feet.
