You awaken to the sun beating down on you. Nothing has changed since you
fell asleep on the beach, except that your fire has burned out. It is
hot on the island, and the hot sand nearly burns your toes. You take
refuge in the forest, where it is shadier and less hot.
You knew you should have listened to your mother when she told you not to enlist on the Endeavor. She said the ship was cursed. You told her you didn't care, and went on board anyway. The ship hit a reef, and now you're the only survivor of the wreck, barely able to swim yourself to shore on a deserted island. It pains you to realize that the argument over enlisting is probably the last conversation you'll ever have with her. You start to cry. After a good, hard, cry, you get down to practical matters. You will need better shelters than the beach when the rains start. You will need a reliable source of fresh, clean water. And, as your stomach reminds you, you will need food, and plenty of it. You start off into the forest, looking for a river you can drink out of and maybe some coconuts or something to eat. Not too far into the forest, you bump into a young woman whose attractiveness still shows despite (or perhaps because of) her bamboo skirt and makeshift bra and pigtails. From the look of it, she's already found a coconut. "Another human!" you both yell, and embrace, wildly jumping up and down, just glad to see someone else. After a little bit you realize she wasn't on your boat, and the look on her face indicates she has no idea who you are. "My name's Mangoe." "That's not your real name, is it?" you laugh. "No, but who cares what I was called back home? Not like I'm going back there anytime soon. You?" "Well, if you're going to go by a new name, maybe I should too. You can call me Robinson," you say, deciding to name yourself after the famous literary castaway. "All right, Robinson. Or do you mind if I call you Robbie? It sounds better. Anyway, Robbie, how long have you been on this island?" "Not much. I just got here yesterday. Found some driftwood, made a fire, went to sleep. I was too exhausted to do anything else." "I got here yesterday too, in a lifeboat. I made myself some clothes and tried to make a fire, but I used up the last of the matches that were in the lifeboat to do it. You know, we should stick together. You know how to make a fire, I have some supplies left in the lifeboat, we can conquer this island together." You nod. "Sounds like a plan. United we stand, divided we fall, my father always said, and believe me, I'd like to be still standing when this whole thing's over."
