Fred felt that it would be interesting, and perhaps useful, to learn about
what magical talents dragons had, so he chose to listen to Sartoma's
instruction of Astra. In particular, he wondered whether Belboz's magical
abilities whilst in his human form had been a result of his being a mage
like any other human mage, or whether his being a mage had been a
consequence of his true form being that of a dragon. In other words, would
Astra have powerful magic at her disposal even when in her human form or
only when she wore her dragon body?
"Your most basic, and most important, magical ability is of course your ability to transform," Sartoma began. "As you've found, your 'natural' form is now your dragon one. Reverting to that form is therefore easy, whereas transforming into your human form - and maintaining it thereafter - takes a conscious effort, though with practice the effort required should become very small. Those aren't the only forms that you can adopt though. You can also become a hellhound. That form is useful for its fighting ability in spaces that are too confined for a dragon. However you can't transform directly from human to hellhound or vice versa; all transformations must be either to or from the base form of dragon."
