Well before Astra had finished speaking, her sword was at the mage's
throat. Now that she was no longer twisting his hand, the pain from the
broken bones was bearable, no more than an ache, and he was able to
perform a translation spell that would allow her to understand and speak
his language. Fortunately this only required him to recite the spell to
himself inside his head, since he didn't know how this strange, fierce
woman might react to any gestures or chanting on his part.
"Please forgive me," he said. "I meant you no harm." On a strict definition of harm, that was arguably true, though it was certainly misleading. "So why did you try a sleep spell on me then, mage? Don't bother to answer that. Now you will give me a little information. What is this land, and where does this path lead?" The mage blinked in surprise. How could she not know? But all the while that swordpoint was at his throat, he would have to answer her questions. Both of them knew that well before he could unleash any magic against her, he would be a dead man.
