The dragon reared up, giving a scream of rage and pain. It twisted its
long neck and fixed Fred with a look of awful malevolence. It opened its
awful mouth, showing the huge sharp teeth that could skewer a man right
through even if he was wearing plate-armour. It sent forth a gout of
flame towards Fred. Fred found himself backed up against a large rock,
with no memory of having retreated. Velus, having no armour, was trying to
cower behind him. The dragon slashed at the air with its cruel claws.
Its ugly leathery wings spread. It lurched towards Fred and spurted flame
again, but this time the flame was feeble. Its grisly head crashed to the
ground in front of him. The dragon was dead!
Fred scrambled up its scaly side and seized the hilt of his sword, which
was still buried in the dragon. He pulled, and the sword came out
easily...too easily. To his horror, Fred saw that the corrosive juices of
the dragon were digesting the tempered steel. Even as he watched, most of
the blade was destroyed,leaving him only the jewelled hilt and a couple of
inches or discoloured blade.
"My sword! The ancient brand of the d'Honaires!" wailed Fred "It is
destroyed! This priceless heirloom is no more!"
"Do not lament, Lord Fred!" said Astra "The sword has been destroyed by
homourable means. Take this hilt home and hang it at the head of the
great hall of your ancestral castle, as a reminder of the glory you have
brought to your name by slaying the dragon. After this act, the King will
no doubt authorize the forging of a new and greater blade, the sword of
Lord Frederigo d'Honaire the Dragonslayer, and all your descendants will
honour you through it!"
She drew closer, much closer. "What glory you have brought upon yourself
and your ancient line!" she murmured "You are truly a hero worthy of my
favours. Let me be the mother of d'Honaires to come!"
Lord Fred gazed down into her eyes. Her pupils were huge with desire. Her
meaning was obvious. "Astra" Fred said huskily
