The death of the dragon

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 4134

The dragon reared up, giving a scream of rage and pain. It twisted its long neck and fixed Fred with a look of awful malevolence. It opened its awful mouth, showing the huge sharp teeth that could skewer a man right through even if he was wearing plate-armour. It sent forth a gout of flame towards Fred. Fred found himself backed up against a large rock, with no memory of having retreated. Velus, having no armour, was trying to cower behind him. The dragon slashed at the air with its cruel claws. Its ugly leathery wings spread. It lurched towards Fred and spurted flame again, but this time the flame was feeble. Its grisly head crashed to the ground in front of him. The dragon was dead! Fred scrambled up its scaly side and seized the hilt of his sword, which was still buried in the dragon. He pulled, and the sword came out easily...too easily. To his horror, Fred saw that the corrosive juices of the dragon were digesting the tempered steel. Even as he watched, most of the blade was destroyed, leaving him only the jewelled hilt and a couple of inches or discoloured blade. "My sword! The ancient brand of the d'Honaires!" wailed Fred "It is destroyed! This priceless heirloom is no more!" "Do not lament, Lord Fred!" said Astra "The sword has been destroyed by homourable means. Take this hilt home and hang it at the head of the great hall of your ancestral castle, as a reminder of the glory you have brought to your name by slaying the dragon. After this act, the King will no doubt authorize the forging of a new and greater blade, the sword of Lord Frederigo d'Honaire the Dragonslayer, and all your descendants will honour you through it!" She drew closer, much closer. "What glory you have brought upon yourself and your ancient line!" she murmured "You are truly a hero worthy of my favours. Let me be the mother of d'Honaires to come!" Lord Fred gazed down into her eyes. Her pupils were huge with desire. Her meaning was obvious. "Astra" Fred said huskily

  1. "Let us find an inn, and get Velus drunk, then you and I may retire to a goose-feather bed and there disport ourselves"
  2. "Will you marry me?"
  3. "I have taken a vow of celibacy, and I could not love thee loved not I honour more"
  4. "I fear thou art no virgin, and only a pure maid is acceptable to a d'Honaire"
  5. "I need a Phillips screwdriver to remove my codpiece, have you got one?"
  6. but just then Velus said "Just a bloody minute, it was I who struck the mortal blow, not this lah-di-dah aristocrat"
