Well, Horse, What Now?

The horse let her on, and then trotted a few steps, away from the hay, and then quietly but unpredictably wriggled and twisted his back and hindquarters. It was not as dramatic as kicking up his hind legs, but it was effective. Astra was easily dislodged in less than a minute, and landed on her knees and hands. Mercury had a lot of experience in removing unwanted riders, and if he were angry at Astra, he could have made her attempt at riding him much more painful.

Astra looked at Mercury in his eyes, and half to herself, said, "Well, horse, I am marooned hundreds of leagues from home, in a land where I am without any friends, and if I do not get out of here soon, I will be captured and sent back to my master, who will not be in a good mood. Do you have any ideas?"

1. Mercury trotted off to a building in the distance and stood there, looking at Astra. Was the horse trying to get her attention?
2. Mercury answered Astra's question.
