Astra decided that, if she was to outrun the search that was sure to be
launched once her escape was discovered, then she needed some means of
travel that was faster than walking. Her current clothing meant that
hitchhiking wasn't really an option, since the jacket and lederhosen that
she was wearing were distinctive enough to be likely to be recognised as
the uniform of Gilder's guards.
So that left stowing away in the back of a cart or stealing a horse. She would prefer the latter, if she could manage it. A cart might not travel very fast or be going very far. Besides, this late in the evening not many carts were likely to be on the roads. Astra knew from her walks in the palace grounds with Gilder that there were no gates in the wall anywhere nearby. Therefore there were unlikely to be any roads of any size in this vicinity leading away from the wall . If she were to skirt the wall until she found such a road, then she would risk discovery. She peered into the deepening darkness, trying to see if there were any smaller paths leading away that might ultimately intersect a major road. But it was now too dark to see much. Whilst the gloom helped her, in that nobody without a lantern was likely to spot her, it was also a hindrance. Waiting till morning wasn't an option, of course; she couldn't afford that much delay.
