Sartoma smiled at Fred's question, but it was a kindly smile rather than a
mocking one. "It may seem very fast to one whose experiemce of speed has
been limited to riding a galloping horse, but at the height where we will
be travelling it will not seem especially fast, for the higher one is the
slower it seems that one is going. I can assure you that none of us will
have any trouble with the speed, and nor will our balloon or our gondola.
However, at such a high altitude it is likely to be very cold, so we shall
need to wear plenty of warm clothing."
"What about Astra?" Fred asked. "She may not have any trouble with the speed, but how about the cold? She won't be able to wrap up warmly." "She will not suffer from the cold. Dragons are very well insulated. Returning to the question of which route we should take, I think we ought to discuss it with her - and with Checkers too - before coming to any final decision." Meanwhile Astra was becomingly increasingly frustrated by the slowness with which her lesson had been progressing. All she had been allowed to do so far was to glide, when she felt that she was capable of much more. Of course, gliding is all that Checkers really knows about from first hand experience, she reflected, possibly not wholly accurately. I'm sure that her wings don't have a fraction of the power of mine, and she may be assuming that my own flying ability is no greater than her own.
