So Fred and his new companion went back the way that Fred had come, until they reached a point where the passage divided. By this time, Fred had found out that the beautiful damsel's name was Alma.

I don't suppose that you have any idea which way we should go from here, Alma?" Fred asked. "Unfortunately the map that I was given has been useless."

1. Unfortunately, Alma is as lost as Fred is.
2. Fortunately Alma has a photographic memory and, having once had a good map before she lost that along with everything else, knows which way they should go.
