The Never Ending Quest - Episode 4058

Fred is staring at the blue rift that seems to be speaking to his mind when suddenly four people in odd clothing fly from the rift and slam into him! As Fred staggers up he finds himself staring into the eyes of a petite red-head. She is staring at him with wonder and pursing her lips. "Hi," she says meekly. "My name's Willow, have you seen Buffy?"

Even before he could answer yet another of the group interrupted. She was older than the red-head, but still young, wore all black clothing and had an intense look in her eyes, as if she were looking right through Fred at everything all around. "I'm Max and if this is a Manticore trick I swear I'll kill you, pal."

"This isn't real..." mumbled a third woman from the group. "This can't be happening... I'm dreaming, yup, that's it... ha, ha." She was the oldest woman in the group and was extremely thin. She was currently chewing on a strand of her blond hair and babbling. "I see jesters and cowboys and biker chicks and little girls... oh, gawd, what can this mean... I mean, sure I always wanted to be taken by a guy with a sense of humor... but this is going a bit overboard. And what's the deal with the chicks? I'm not going lesbo..." and on and on and on she went until the fourth member of the troup chimed in.

"Listen little philly," said the man in his deep voice. "Stop yer yapping, it's not doing any of us any good. My name's John, John Wayne... what's yours?"

She looked at the man wearing the cowboy hat and said, "I'm Ally. Ally McBeal. But this can't be happening... I must be home, or in the office, maybe even in the ladies room at the night clu--"

"Shut it Ally!" growled Max.

And so an awkward silence filled the room. People from different realities and different time periods all standing in a chamber filled with bodies suspended in animation. Fred stood there in his jester outfit, taking it all in. The rift was gone, but it had infused a sense of orientation within him. He stared at the sarcophogi with his acquaintances frozen within: there was the dog whom he knew was Velus; the warrior princess Astra; and the King's daughter Exotica. Fred sobbed. The King was long dead, as he should have been. It had been over a hundred years since he had tried to kill the Dragon of the Southern Caves. It was only a cruel trick of magic that had kept him alive and now he was the Dragon's servant, a wretch of a jester, a fool with no bearing.

He stared at these newcomers. They spoke with strange accents and wore bizarre clothing. He recalled their names: Willow, Max, Ally, and John. He saw from their demeanors that they were strangers to each other, he wondered how they had been brought here together. He wondered if they were the solution to his most dreadful problems: killing the Dragon, defeating the evil that ruled his homeland, stopping the wars that had spread to all corners of the world.

  1. Can this be Fred's salvation? Will the Dragon be taken down by persons from alternate realities? Why else did a teen-witch, a bicycle courier/genetic warrior, a lawyer, and a Hollywood icon come to this place?
