Without thinking, Fred starts meandering up the path that spirals upward around the stalagmite. As he walks he continues pondering over his recent actions. Why oh why, muses Fred, why did I kill poor Belboz? The necromancer did me a great favor by charming my sword, and all he wanted in return was a few measley coins. Why not give him the coins? Why did I slaughter him in cold blood?
Fred continues pondering this question and wonders if this isn't evidence of a serious flaw in his character. He continues thinking over the issue while walking up the path for what seems like hours and hours. Walking and pondering, pondering and walking. Pondering and walking, walking and pondering. After an indeterminate amount of time, Fred suddenly stops and takes a look around. He notices for the first time that he has climbed a great distance. This stalagmite is more massive than I thought, says Fred to no one but himself. He looks up and sees that he's not even half-way to the top. However, that is not what shocks him the most. What really sets Fred's knees to shaking is the image of the Necromancer Belboz standing before him. Belboz says nothing. He just glares at Fred with a look of pure hatred in his eyes.
Belboz! shouts Fred. You're okay! I thought I'd killed you back there. Hey, I'm really, really sorry about that. Here, let me pay you for the spell. Will two of the King's own gold Florins be enough? Belboz says nothing. He glowers at Fred for what seems (to Fred at least) like an eternity. Fred starts to get really nervous now. Come on, man, says Fred, say something to me I said I was sorry! Belboz says nothing. Instead he raises his staff high in the air, spins it around, and then points it directly at Fred.
