What Fred Encountered in the Desert

Actually, Fred was sucked through, although it did feel like he was
falling. Up and up and up he went through the hole and into a narrow
tunnel. He bumped his head and bruised his knee, bit his tongue and chipped
a tooth, cut his ears and smashed his nose, and finally was spewed forth
out of the caves and high into the air above some rocky ground. He
landed hard on the barren ground. "Oof!" Fred gathered himself and finally managed to get on his feet. He scanned the landscape around him and realized he was in none other than the dreaded Calamari Desert, far to the north of the Kingdom. "Oh, this is just great!" Fred exclaimed. "I guess I'll just sit down and die under the hot sun!" So it seemed that our hero, Lord Fred, had given up for the moment. He was disgruntled and tired, and gave in to his own self-pity. Infact, he just might have stayed there and died if it hadn't been for another strange turn of events. Anyone who knows anything about the Calamari Desert would know that it is filled with all manner nasty things. Giant scorpions, bandits, snakes, lava lizards, and orcs all claim the barren wasteland as their home. So let's give Fred an adventure, we can't just let him give up and die! So what does Fred suddenly encounter?...
