A Bright Golden Light

Sure enough, the four of them could see a bright golden light building in the chest, peeping through the crack at the lid.

"It's going to protect us again!" Paula shouted in elation.

"If so, I hope it does it soon," Astra said grimly, "Because we're almost out of time!"

No sooner were the words out of her mouth than the chest sprang open again, and the bright golden light spilled out into the night. Again, the four of them were so entranced by it that even the imminent firestorm faded into obscurity.

The burst lasted less than a minute, then faded. As the chest slammed closed with a solid thunk, the ladies realized:

1. The fire was out - they were safe!
2. The fire was out - but while they were safe, they were once again dwarves.
3. They and the chest had been transported back across the river - safe, but once again cut off from the path to the mountain.
4. The fire was still raging around them!
5. The fire was still raging around them - but they now felt perfectly safe!
6. The bright light had summoned the dragon! But why?!?
