Stacy grabbed the book from the executive and slammed it shut, hoping (for
no obvious reason) that this would terminate the latest recursion. It
occurred to her that there could only be a finite number of pages in the
book. What would happen when they were all filled up? Would that mean that
her own situation would have reached some sort of resolution by that
point? Or, if the book could write itself, might it also be able to
generate whatever extra pages would be needed to resolve the story?
She realised that the executive had said something. "I'm sorry," she said. "Would you mind saying that again? I'm afraid my mind was wandering." "I was saying that I've heard of an author saying that a book seemed to write itself, but I didn't expect to see it happen quite so literally." "I suppose not. I'm now sure that I'm the author of this book, and it's clearly autobiographical. Since, like Amanda in the book, I've lost my memory, I don't have the faintest idea of how it can be writing itself." "I wonder how the book will have coped with what you just said." "It will be recursive again, I expect. Amanda seems to be writing a book about Amanda, who is writing a book about Amanda, and so on... The only difference is that I, at the top level, have a different name from the others." "I was just thinking, if you've lost your memory, wouldn't reading the book through from the start help you?" "I skimmed through it earlier. It starts when I find myself on the subway with no memory, earlier today, so it doesn't help me at all."
