A Small Transformation

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 39613

After a moment, Astra felt the lock mechanism pop. "Ah, there we go," she said. "Now let's see what's in here."

Gently, Astra rasied the lid of the chest. Before she could see what was inside, though, there was a great burst of light, and the four women were all seized by a rather odd sensation, as though they were simultaneously falling and spinning.

It only lasted a moment, but when it was through, the foursome gaped at each other in shock.

The women had been transformed into dwarves. They were now less then half their previous height, with fat hands and feet adorning the ends of their now stubby limbs, and their faces giving the appearance of having been mashed in and stretched out.

"I guess this answers my question," Frederica said glumly, her voice now high-pitched and gruffer.

"Hey, there's a note on the side of this thing," Paula said.

"It wasn't there before," Berenice said!

"No, and we weren't like this before either," Astra said. She was upset at what had happened, but like the others, she was taking it calmly. Almost too calmly, she thought as she detached the note and unfolded it.

"Well, what does it say?" Berenice demanded.

As Astra read the letter to herself, her heart sank. "It's in the tongue of the Western Dwarf Tribe - which I shouldn't be able to read, but somehow I can. It says that whoever opened the chest is now under a geiss, a compulsion spell, to return it to the Dwarf King. Until we do," she finished bleakly, "We'll remain like this."

"How're we supposed to get it out of these caves?" Frederica asked. "It's almost as big as we are now?"

"And what's inside it, anyway?" Paula asked.

"How we'll get it out of here, I don't know, but I do know we have to. As to what's in it - well, let's see."

Astra stood on tiptoe and pulled herself up to look inside.

  1. The chest was filled with gold and silver coins and precious jewels.
  2. The chest contained an ornate crown.
  3. The chest held a series of obviously Dwarven skeletons.
  4. The chest held a gleaming sword, broken into five pieces.
  5. The chest was empty!
