The Right Way (They Hope)

"Just out of curiousity," Berenice said, "What do you expect to find this way?"

Astra shook her head. "I have no idea. But I think avoiding the dragon is our best course of action until we can either get out of these caves or find something better than a little knife and a sling to fight it with."

"I'll go along with that," Paual agreed fervently. "How long were you stuck in there?" Frederica asked.

"Much too long," Astra said grimly, which seemed to settle that.

The four of them kept on a good while. But the three girls, now flesh and blood again, soon found themselves tiring. And after being chained to a wall for "much too long", Astra was in little better shape. Finally, they reached a small alcove that looked fairly safe.

"We'll rest here," Astra said. "I'll stand guard for a while, then the three of you will take a turn." The ladies nodded, though Berenice did so grudgingly.

Astra had turned to go sit at the doorway when she heard Paula exlaim, "By the King's beard! What's this?" Astra went inside and found her three new charges staring in wonder at:

1. A large wood and brass chest.
2. An ancient-looking tome, set on an elaborate wooden stand.
3. A very familiar looking suit of armor!
4. The largest egg she'd ever seen!
5. A small glowing orb, hovering about three feet off the floor.
