BDP: Hanging Skulls

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 3942

Fred's Journal, continued...

So we headed south. Both Astra and I were still angry at Velus for throwing the map away. For a moment I seriously considered gutting and eating him. Dog meat is a delicacy in some parts of the Great Kingdom. But instead we made a makeshift collar for him and tied most of our bags to him. The least he could do for us was carry our stuff. Don't forget, I had my long sword and Astra had a short sword. If anything came upon us, we didn't want to be caught with our hands full.

After a few hours the passage led into a circular cavern. We were shocked to see a great number of human skulls hanging from the rock ceiling and laid out on the ground in strange patterns. Astra, who it turned out was a damn fine draftsman, pulled out some vellum and began tracing the design down for future study. Velus and I didn't like the feel of the place and quickly wished to move on. But Astra was taking her sweet time and wouldn't stop drawing. Finally Velus got so mad he lifted up his back leg and pissed on one of the skulls. Astra got the message and she packed her things and we continued on.

Besides the passage we entered from, the cavern had three other passageways, each one pointing in one of the cardinal directions. We decided to continue traveling south. How big could the caves be, after all? If we kept on a straight course, sooner or later we would reach the other end.

Although I feel we will soon find either the dragon or a way out of here, I feel a vague unease. I'm not sure, but somehow I wish Velus hadn't acted so rashly. Whoever laid those skulls down probably wouldn't find having their little display covered in doggy urine a very nice gesture.

  1. Still lost, still traveling south...
