Sir Paulito did want to battle the dragon but it looks like he must first fight the evil shapechanger that had taken the form of Lord Fred.
Now shapechangers, being shapechangers, cannot be defeated by convential weaponry. One must engage in a battle of wits. Then and only then when the shapechanger (more commonly known as a 'dargon') retreat, confused and disoriented by the defeat it had suffered.
Sir Paulito challenges the evil dargon to a game of chess. Now no chess boards being available, the dargon creates one. The pieces, when moved, are connected to the board by a thin tendril that slides with the piece.
The chess match goes slowly. Paulito loses a rook. Fred, a bishop. Each side then loses three pawns.
Paulito looks at the board. He could move that piece -that- way and be closer to winning but it would put his king in danger. There is another safer path he could go but it would take longer and wasn't as definite as the first option.
