The squire's natural inclination was to go towards the light. It seemed
more likely that the four whom he was following would have gone that way.
Also there would be enough illumination for him to put out his torch.
Then, coming with darkness at his back, he might well be able to get a
good sight of them without their being able to see him. Since he could
hear no sounds, it was possible that - assuming that they were there -
most of them might be asleep, though no doubt they would have left one of
their number on guard.
He could come up with no convincing argument for heading towards the water, and having come this far he was not about to turn back. But just then he thought that he heard the sound of voices coming from the other fork, barely audible above the running water. Should he extinguish his torch to avoid detection, and try to creep along that passage in darkness? The distance could not be very far.
