Sigourney's hopes - just raised when the constable had kicked Nilth
unconscious - promptly plummeted again. She couldn't risking attacking the
constable in the market square. Not only did he look far fitter than Nilth
had been, but there was too much risk that doing so would attract
unwelcome attention. People might not overlook an assault on a constable
like they might do for one on a disreputable-looking man like Nilth.
She thought fast, and came up with a ruse that she hoped might work. "Look," she said. "Prince Karo wants all three of us, and you might not get much of a reward just for me. But if you come with me, I'll lead you to my sisters." She had no intention of doing that of course, but if she could lead the constable into a deserted side street and then manage to distract him, she might be able to escape.
