Occasional grilles in the roof of the catacombs, high up out of reach,
allowed in a little light. They had also let in a little water the last
time it had rained, so that the catacombs were damp as well as cool. Fred
and Astra therefore walked briskly in an effort to keep warm, as they
searched for a way out, and made sure to avoid stepping in any puddles
with their bare feet. At least the floor was perfectly smooth stone.
They had not gone far when they found something remarkable. Standing on a block of stone was a marvellously detailed model of a castle. It was seemingly made out of crystal and was about a foot high and eighteen inches across. "It's a model of this castle," Fred said. "What amazing craftsmanship!" He reached out for it. "Wait a moment!" Astra cautioned him. "Don't you see? 'Knight takes castle.' This smells fishy to me. Surely Manathus would have known about it. Could it be some sort of trap?"
