Fred, thinking only of himself, threw the dog down toward the bottom of
the bottomless pit, hoping to gain enough upward momentum to hoist
himself onto the rim of the pit.
It wasn't enough. Velus yelped, but Fred didn't care. Air resistance, he figured, would slow the dog down to its terminal velocity, and since the pit was bottomless, the dog wouldn't hit anything. Fred, on the other hand, forgot how far he had fallen. At that depth, Fred would have had to ignite a Saturn V rocket. Discouraged, Fred arranged himself in his most comfortable free-fall position, took a cheese and bacon sandwich out of his pack, and ate it. Suddenly...something happened.
