In the Inn...

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 38071

So at three in the morning a group of twenty demifoxes, together with Arkas, surround the inn and wait for the signal to move in. All seems quiet. All intent on what they believe will be a target total of three...

Inside the inn

"I can't sleep," grumps Jarlath softly to the others, giving up. "It's jetlag, you know."

Synizn, meanwhile, also can't sleep. He's too excited about returning to dragonkind to sleep, really. As such, he naturally overhears Jarlath.

"Jetlag?" he asks, sitting up from the spot he'd staked out to rest until dawn when the equipment shops opened up. "What's that, a type of sickness from the land where you come from? You don't look . . . sick."

"Uh, no that's not what it is," Jarlath says slowly, looking over at the others ask if asking for help.

Hm, do believe that that is what could be termed in some circles a "slip of the tongue". He hadn't meant to be overheard by the native Synizn and have to explain that arcane term. Being that we want to reveal as little as possible of the fact that we're from off world/reality amongst other things, I can see where that'd be a good idea. Goodness knows I'd have enough of an awkward time explaining how though I look like a race known to be less than friendly with human beings that I really am NOT evil. Lovely, yes. Evil, no. But all that said, I believe I know of a way to "bail" Jarlath out.

"Ack," I laugh. "It's just a colorful way of saying that his day/night cycle is out of whack. You know, being a flying type, that if you travel too far east or west too fast you'll notice that the Sun rises and sets at different times than what you're used to, right? Nothing a dragon type would be effected by, of course, being that your sleep cycles are something like days or weeks, not hours. But when a human being is exposed to such disruptions of the day/night cycle really effects them."

"Oh," he blinks, then tilts his head. "But . . . does that mean you and your human friend can fly? Only race that I know of besides the unwinged who would be able to do it even clumsily would be a strange tinker gnome called Plucky and nobody is foolish enough to join him in that strange craft he's cobbled together. Way too dangerous."

"Well, yeah, of course." Jarlath mutters, seeming to remember something embarrassing. My sister looks a little bit put off by a memory, as well. Which I believe means . . . . that they'd mistakenly taken a ride that they'd regretted.

"We have other means besides foolish gnome devices," Dragon Synizn explains to his brother. "Means like much more reliable and safe means of magery. One example being flying carpets."

Of course, we fail to mention another group who uses other means to fly. One group (the Military that that human, Eric Jones, belong with) in particular to Terra Prime who has the most delightful sayings. My favorite one was "The Stupid Shall Be Punished." Laughed until I cried when I heard that one, really.

Ah, you had to be there....

Well, the magical types are in the process of explaining to Synizn how to make magic carpets (kind of like cooks exchanging recipes, really) and how uncomfortable long term riding on one would be when we get interrupted! Goodness, it's almost ridiculous the interrupters. However, say what you will about the native demifoxes of this world, twenty of them might be awkward for us fighter types to handle alone.

At least we have more magic at our disposal than what they in the one hedge mage who's accompanied them, for magic backup!

  1. "What are you doing here Arkas?" Synizn asks softly, glaring at the human mage. "And why did you bring friends? Heh, as if I can't guess."
