After the three heroes had been immobilised, a slight, boyish figure shimmered into view beside the pond outside the caves. "So you saw through my 'front man' the dragon, then," he said. "Yes, I've been responsible for all the pillaging that went on. And I was behind the spell on Velus and the magic chains that bound Astra. So what am I to do with the three of you now? It was convenient for me to have the dragon blamed for everything, and I can't have you telling people the true state of affairs. I could just kill you, of course, but where's the artistry in that?"

He thought for a moment, then decided on a course of action and cast a spell.

  1. The pond now had three unusual marble fountains, in the shape of a naked man, a naked woman and a dog (Velus having been turned back to that form). Better not to ask where the jets of water were emerging from.
  2. Fred, Astra and Velus found they had total amnesia.
  3. Fred, Astra and Velus were transported back into the caves and chained to the wall.
  4. "I need a replacement dragon to blame for my depradations. Well, three dragons would be even better..."
