After several tense minutes of getting nowhere with his psychologist, Josh
finally has his breakthrough.
"Well doc...I haven't felt in control of myself for five years now.
Before that night where I woke up at the side of a rural highway, I was
relatively happy. I had a nice job, an apartment in a nice town, a really
decent girlfriend, everything. Then, one Saturday night, I go to a party,
have a few drinks, and then I black out. I come to with my head spinning,
waking up in the cool night air in a place I didn't even recognize. The
next thing I know, I start...doing things without ever thinking
about it."
"Did you ever fight this? This seems like you're a puppet for someone
else's amusement."
"Oh yeah, I've fought against it. I already know that I've been
manipulated by greater forces for five years, and they make me do just
about everything, from the sublime to the ridiculous. They think
I'm naturally a depraved person, and sometimes, they've convinced me of
it. It's kind of like how someone becomes dehumanized while in prison for
many years..."
"Tell me about resisting these 'outside forces' now."
"Given the choice between some really disgusting choices I've had to make,
I have walked away from some of the situations I've been put in. This
probably made me look like a genuine lunatic to many people, since
all they see is this stranger ranting away at people only he seems to be
aware of. And sometimes, the people controlling me run with it.
Sometimes they'll make things easier from me. But other times,
they'll force me to do something disgusting, or they'll kill me and then
bring me back. I can't even count how many times I've died or been killed
in the past five years, and yanked back from the afterlife just to be
dropped in some other strange or insane situation."
"Now wait...I'm not sure I follow you about the returning to life thing.
Granted, your situation is a unique one indeed, but the problem you seem
to be exhibiting is completely incapable of bringing a person back from
the dead. Perhaps you were just knocked out by something, and then you
came to in a completely different setting?"
"I...I don't know how to answer that. I'm not sure how I could come back
from some of the incidents I've been killed in. At one point, I had been
cut in half in a butcher shop..."
Josh doesn't realize it, but once he mentioned the returning to life
stories, he had planted the seed of doubt in his psychologist. What
happens next?
-
Josh continues to talk about his past five years.
-
Josh is declared legally insane.
-
The psychologist stands up and belts Josh in the mouth.
