The machine was obviously the work of some mage. (At least, it was obvious to Fred, though readers may have their own ideas.) Fred had no idea what the device might be for. He cautiously gave it a wide berth, whilst wondering how a nomad's hut came to have such an item.

He managed to find a couple of loaves of rather stale bread, and there was a barrel of water from which he filled his own container. Then he left the hut.

  1. The woman was still lying unconscious on the stretcher.
  2. The woman was stirring.
  3. The woman was gone! But that was impossible! He had only been inside the hut for about five minutes.
