"Fred, thank goodness!" Tarsa responded. To Fred's surprise, she bent over
and hugged him.
"The 'old broad' just saved your life, along with Tarsa," Skye said drily. "She was the High Priestess a few decades ago, but the Temple banished her too. It seems to be a habit of theirs to banish their best people." "Then thank you, ma'am. I'm afraid I don't know your name." "They used to call me Satrina. But 'ma'am' will do fine." "What happened before the nightmares? My memory is kinda fuzzy." "You rescued me from a Hand of Valmar, Fred," Tarsa told him. "You killed it, and we somehow got flung out into Kavesta Forest." "Valmar will try again," Satrina said. "He doesn't like to be baulked of his prey." "But Tarsa is no longer High Priestess," Fred objected. "Why should he be interested in her now?" "Because after what happened he will bear a grudge. And that grudge now extends to you, Fred, I'm afraid. If the planned ceremony goes ahead to prevent Valmar's rebirth, with Tarsa's replacement officiating, then if it's a success you both should be in no danger after that. Of course, if it isn't a success, then the outlook is bleak for everyone, not just for you." "But that ceremony isn't due to be held for almost two weeks," Tarsa said. "How are Fred and I supposed to remain safe in the meantime? We only just got away with it this time; we are unlikely to be so lucky again."
