"I don't have much faith in the Temple any more," Tarsa said. "Since they effectively banished me, I doubt that they would help us. Besides, going back to town would take too long. I think that this so-called mad witch is our only hope. But assuming that she doesn't conveniently find us herself, then how do we find her? Especially as I don't have the strength to move Fred, and we can't leave him on his own."

"I'll fly up above the trees and see if I can spot anything," Skye replied.

When he flew down again, he reported: "There's a wisp of smoke rising above the trees, maybe a mile or so away. It might well be from her cottage; after all, people in this forest must be few and far between. I'll go and investigate, and if it's her I'll ask her if she'll come and help."

"All right. Please be as quick as you can. I don't know how long Fred's got."

  1. Twenty minutes later, Skye returned with a distinguished-looking middle-aged woman. She didn't look mad. Tarsa hoped that that bit might have been just Temple propaganda.
  2. Twenty minutes later, Skye returned with a strange middle-aged woman. Looking at her, Tarsa could easily believe that she was mad. Her heart sank.
  3. Twenty minutes later, Skye returned alone.
  4. An hour passed, and there was no sign of Skye. Tarsa became increasingly worried.
