An idea occurred to Checkers. "Fred, those machines that you were talking
of that can cut through rock. Do you think that we could use one to free
Astra from where she is trapped?"
"No. Any drilling machine which we might find that was small enough for the two of us to carry would take forever to widen a tunnel enough for Astra to be able to use it, especially as we would have no oxen or water to power the drill so would have to rely on our own muscles. But it was a clever idea even so." Checkers' only reply was a yawn. That made Fred realise that he too felt weary. When had he slept last? It must be quite some time ago. Both of them looked at the beds, which seemed as though they should be very comfortable. "Astra knew that we might be some time," Fred said. "Do you think that it would be all right if we took a short nap? I feel very tired, and I suspect that you do too. We've seen nothing that could possibly harm us if we should both fall asleep." "The beds have been made up so neatly that I don't think that we should get underneath the bed-clothes, and risk leaving them untidy afterwards. But I don't think that it could hurt if we lay on top of them." So Fred and Checkers selected adjacent beds, and were soon asleep.
