The Commander's men reported back that they had entered the inner room
just in time to see the Geohound disappear into a dark vortex, which a few
seconds later had vanished into nothingness. The Commander sighed. He was
going to have a difficult report to write. Two men had been killed,
seemingly by some unknown wild creature. Tarsa and the Geohound - the only
people who might be able to shed any light on those deaths - were both
missing, themselves presumed dead. And there were at least two fatalities
amongst the mountain men as well; he had almost forgotten about them. Some
days, like today, he wished that he had taken up a different line of work.
As Fred jumped into the vortex, he thought that if only Valmar had known that Tarsa was no longer the High Priestess, and so was no longer of any value to him, life would have been a lot simpler. For a moment, all he could see was a swirling black nothingness, though he could not explain how nothingness could swirl. Then the blackness dispersed, and he found himself standing in a passage seemingly carved out through solid rock. It was lit by a dim orange light, as though produced by fire, which seemed to grow much brighter further down the tunnel. He could see no sign of Tarsa, nor of anyone else, and all was silent for the moment. Then he almost jumped out of his skin, as something heavy landed with a thump on his shoulder. "Don't do that," Fred hissed at Skye. He would have preferred to have yelled rather than hissed, but if whatever unholy power dwelt in this place was still unaware of his presence then he would rather not risk alerting it.
