Past the Staircase

They agreed that going up the staircase was out, as they were wary about
the chance of it collapsing and them being seriously injured or even
killed in the fall. They thus decided to carry along the passage which
continued straight on with no deviations to the left, right, up or down.
Eventually the passage came to a T-Junction. Astra wanted to left, but
Stacy wanted to go right. Splitting up seemed the only option available,
but that they were loath to do. Stacy finally conceded that Astra had more
experience so they both went down the left branch which carried straight
on as far as the eye could see. They were soon to encounter an obstruction in what appeared to be an invisible wall, though they soon realised it was solid glass. Looking at they surroundings they could see nothing that might help them get past the glass wall, so they retraced their steps until they arrived back at the T-junction. They tried the right branch only to come across a similar obstacle as well as a disagreeable lack of means of dealing with it. That seemed to leave their only option as either going back to the wrought iron spiral staircase, or back to the cavern with the statue, where there was one passage left to travel down. Stacy was reminded of the last time they came to what seemed like a dead end, and Astra had inadvertently encountered a secret crawlspace of tunnel. Of course that didn't necessarily mean that there was any way of getting past the glass walls, though she still managed to convince Astra for them to try one last time. So they felt along the tunnel walls near the glass barrier as well as the floor of the passage, with no success. The ceiling was too high for even Astra to reach, so if there was anything there, they had no chance of finding and operating it. Even the barrier itself came up with nothing. Dejected they walked back to the other glass barrier and did the same thing - but this time, Stacy find something in the glass barrier itself. They both heard a 'click' and both stepped back in amazement when the barrier itself appeared to retreat into the floor itself. They carried on along the passage only to stop short
