Fred and Astra now bitterly regretted having surrendered, for fighting
against even overwhelming odds would have been better than what now faced
them. But they had never suspected that their captors would be quite so
xenophobic.
The walled town that they were approaching only came into view when they were quite close to it, as it was hidden by a temporary narrowing of the valley. Their captors herded them to a gate in the wall. At this hour, late in the night, the gate was shut, but guards from inside soon opened it. Once within the walls, they were taken though deserted streets, for almost everyone was still in bed. Before long they were brought to what was evidently the town jail. They were shoved into a single cell, and told that they would be executed soon after dawn. Then the door was locked, and their captors and the jailer departed. "Well," Astra said, "what do we do now?" Not that she really expected anyone to come up with a brilliant plan. Things seemed rather hopeless.
