The Deadly Queen

Perhaps the Doctor feared what would happen if one of the party were captured. He had lost the initiative in pulling Josh back. If he were to 'win' the game, his opponent would have to blunder.

And yet he was serene, as if he were thinking that "it was only a game." That was a fine attitude to take in most cases, but in this case, it was something more than a game.

"Knight to King Two." Susan moved in front of the Doctor. She looked safe and sound. Then he heard the sliding sound of the Black Queen, moving diagonally across the board to the right. The Doctor was now in check!

"So soon?" was the only thing that the Doctor said. "Knight to King's Knight Three." Susan was now adjacent to the Black Queen. She stared at the statue. Carved into the base was a woman of middle age, stern, imposing, and malevolent. She could easily imagine this queen enjoying crushing her. The little pawn behind her and to her right was all that was protecting her from capture.

Black was now on the attack, with four pieces deep in the Champions' territory, primed to move.
